Site Information

Situation on a busy corner site at 71 Whiteleigh Avenue, Addington, Christchurch. A near new tilt-slab, 2 storey building of approximately 2000m2, with double height warehouse space.

Client Brief

Take this project from Design to Completion, converting an empty 2 storey building into a High Tech, purpose built Scientific Laboratory with accompanying offices and storage facilities. Attention to detail was paramount, along with the need to clearly understand the clients business and requirements.

Create an environment that is technically correct, and allow for top of the line humidity and temperature controlled atmospheres for the preservation of blood products.

Canterbury Scientific is an international leader in their field, and widely recognised as being providers of outstanding products and services.

Construction

Due to the technical nature of this project we consulted with a number of specialist to assure the correct materials and construction methods where adhered to, to achieve the highest standards possible.

A large chiller unit approximately 50-60m2 was constructed and forms the centre component of the ground floor. This is surrounded by open plan and separate offices and individually temperature and atmospherically controlled laboratories.

New ceiling grids where installed, high tech air conditioning systems were a key component to create the industry specific environment, all new state of the art data and electrical fittings were used to future proof this space, compliant fire protection systems were installed along with new partitioning to create office spaces. The second floor consists of a large laboratory, offices, meeting room, ablution rooms and staff room facilities. All of these areas were constructed as part of the overall project. Extreme care and attention was given to selecting the correct materials from wall linings through to paint finishes. The need to create positive pressure environments was paramount, due the requirement for sterile work spaces. The combination of many trimmings including new flooring, sun blinds and signage added the finishing touches to a project that is both aesthetically pleasing and functionally correct.

Completion

It is always rewarding to bring a project to fruition both in the sense of satisfying the client's needs and to meet our predetermined timelines and budgets, and this was achieved in all aspects. This state of the art laboratory facility is now set up to take Canterbury Scientific into the future. The management and staff are thrilled with the results we achieved and can look forward to working in an environment this is a pleasure to work within and will allow room for future expansion. The team at Canterbury Scientific had a fantastic approach to this project and were instrumental in the overall success. Their ability to work through design challenges and remained focused on what was truly important to their core business made them a pleasure to work with.
